I’ve heard wallpaper is becoming popular again. Is this true? What are some options, and how should I work a patterned look into the home without overwhelming it?
Wallpapers are most definitely back after being stuck in design purgatory for some years. However, they are not back in their flamboyant floral avatar, crowding walls with too much colour and too much pattern. Instead, the wallpapers in style now are tonal, with just a few colours and light patterns. They provide a slight boost to the character of the room, without dominating the environment. Also, they are very textured, giving a rustic feel to the home.
Try wallpapering just one wall to highlight the design or look at highlighting a specific architectural feature of the house by wallpapering it, such as covering a cornice or an alcove in a special print. Remember, though, especially in the humid monsoon season, wallpaper is advisable only if you have perfectly worked out a waterproofing system.
What are some options for window coverings? I need to block the light out of my bedroom, but don’t like the look of heavy fabrics.
The best route to go would be to choose handwoven sheer fabrics that allow light through, but still provide ample shade. A good trick is to use sheer fabrics with patterns on them. Geometric shapes such as stripes or zigzag motifs blend perfectly in modern homes. The patterns create a visual distraction and effectively create an interplay of light and dark according to your convenience. Or, opt for unlined silk in a solid colour that is sheer enough to allow a spacious look, but dark enough to stop light.
