Global warming is the phenomenon when the planet’s range of temperatures start increasing, causing increase in sea levels, ice caps start to melt and also makes the air less clean. Yet a large section of the global population is unaware of its damaging effects and how they are contributing to it. While this has been a subject in numerous movies, it is now finding a place in video games as well.

Carbon Warfare, a mobile game by video game developer Virtuos China, is designed to show where the world is headed at the current rate of energy consumption.

Gameplay

Carbon Warfare is strategy game based in 2030 in North America where you get to play as a business tycoon planning on expanding business at any cost. So if the tycoon finds that a certain farm land can be converted into an industrial area, he has to get rid of the development restriction in place to ease things up. This will increase carbon emissions and the profit for the tycoon.

Developing housing societies with palatial homes with high energy needs is another way of making profit which will increase carbon footprint. Similarly, deep water oil drilling is more profitable than spending in cleaner energy sources. Doing all this will increase the temperature in the city and help build awareness among the people. The amount of profits made is represented through coins which you can use for further investment in other continents.

Graphics

It is a full-fledged strategy game with hardly any visual highlights. Player can see the changes in temperature in all the cities where the tycoon has invested on a world map. Once the tycoon has enough gold coins, the game opens up access to other continents. The game shows the effect of rising temperature on the overall global temperature through a bar on the right side of the screen.

Verdict

It is a very unique game which can help generate awareness about the harms of global warming and pinpoints the exact factors that are causing carbon emissions. If you like strategy games such as Plague Inc or, you will like it. It is not meant for causal gamers looking for strategy games like the Banner Saga 2 that doles out action sequences in small doses. The game works offline, uses just 110MB of storage space after installation and doesn’t have in-app purchases.
