Hello and welcome to the Lounge Podcast! This week we talk to Lounge columnist Samanth Subramanian whose book, Following Fish (Penguin India), has been awarded the Shakti Bhatt First Book Prize this year. In its third year, the Prize is a cash award of Rs 1 Lakh and a trophy.

The genres covered by the Prize are poetry, fiction, creative non-fiction and drama. Past winners have been Pakistani writer Mohammed Hanif’s for his book A Case of Exploding Mangoes (Random House) in 2008. Mridula Koshy’s collection of short stories, If It Is Sweet (Tranquebar Press), was awarded last year.
Samanth’s book was in competition with five others : Homeboy by HM Naqvi; House on Mall Road by Mohyna Srinivasan; Songs of Blood and Sword, A Daughter’s Memoir by Fatima Bhutto; The Wish Maker by Ali Sethi, and Delhi Calm by Vishwajyoti Ghosh.
