Jayant Luthra

29 November

Luthra has been around for more than a decade and is still going strong, though it’s hard to describe his music. Some call it IDM (intelligent dance music), others classify it as psy-tech, minimal and progressive house with live elements, but the man himself refuses to be bracketed into one particular style. He’s played and collaborated with fantastic artists from all over the globe such as Chebi Sabah, Talvin Singh, Namito, Alex Flatner and Quicksilver, and released tunes all over Beatport and iTunes. He’s also scored for Bollywood projects like ‘Zindaa’ and ‘Let’s Enjoy’.

Tabula Rasa, C-2 Square One Designer Arcade, fourth floor, District Centre, Saket (29562666). Call venue for cover charge and timing.

A performance by Swiss dancer- choreographer Anna Huber, who is based in Berlin. She has acquired a formidable reputation as someone who pushes the boundaries of movement through her avant-garde work. Huber, 42, will perform at the second edition of the Delhi International Arts Festival. Though she is famous for working with music that’s specially created for her productions, this is the first time she’ll perform to pre-existing music.

Stück mit Flügel (which she explained means piece with wing/grand piano) is a collaborative effort with her sister, pianist Susanne Huber.

6.30pm. Kamani Auditorium, 1, Copernicus Marg (23388084).

HowZaat

3 December

Sampradaya Dance Creations, Toronto, presents ‘HowZaat!’, a dance presentation on cricket. Don’t be fooled by the name though. It’s a full-fledged bharatanatyam-based dance production that has the performers kitted out in cricket whites, complete with bat and ball. This performance, the brainchild of Toronto-based bharatanatyam dancer and choreographer Lata Pada, will at the very least be different from the rest. Pada was inspired by cricket writer and historian C.L.R. James’ famous statement: “Cricket is first and foremost a dramatic spectacle. It belongs with the theatre, ballet, opera and the dance."

7pm. Habitat World, India Habitat Centre, Lodhi Road (43663333).

Film

The Circle

2 December

A quantum leap forward from Jafar Panahi’s films about children, this is a panoramic account of the many ways in which women are oppressed in present-day Iran. Taking ‘La Ronde’ as its structural model, the narrative passes from one woman to another, finally completing a circle which can only be described as vicious. It opens in a maternity ward with a woman giving birth to a daughter, to the dismay of her in-laws, and ends in a police station, provocatively suggesting an equivalence between the two institutions.

The main characters are three women prisoners released on parole; Panahi provides no background for them, the better to see how they cope with a society in which they have virtually no autonomy. Glimpses of Tehran’s underworld bespeak a social economy untouched by either the country’s ruling clerics or the reformist government. Persian with subtitles. 1 hour, 31 mins. In collaboration with UTV World Movies.

7.30pm. Epicentre, Apparel House, Sector 44, Gurgaon (95124-2715000).

Art discussion

28 November

German artist Norbert Bisky’s paintings are blindingly colourful, intense and often disturbing. Swirling together social realism with pop art, he creates images that are often dark and violent despite the explosive colour palette. Bisky will be in conversation with critic and ‘Time Out’ columnist Girish Shahane. The event has been organised by Galerie Mirchandani+ Steinruecke with the Mohile Parikh Centre for the Visual Arts and Hivos.

6.30pm. Little Theatre, National Centre for the Performing Arts, near Hilton Towers, Nariman Point (66223737).

Work in Progress

3 December

Nataraj Sharma is not known for being particularly market-savvy but ‘Work in Progress’ suggests he may be something of a prophet. When he began the sculptural installation earlier this year, there were no hints of a global recession. Today, the miniature construction site he has fabricated for his show is chillingly reminiscent of the many building projects that stand incomplete across the country because funds have evaporated overnight.

Go through Lower Parel and the skyline shows Sharma’s installation seemingly replicated many times over.

‘Work in Progress’ reflects Sharma’s continued fascination with urban architecture. The grid of architectural blueprints and the clean geometry of multi-storeyed buildings have shown up regularly in his recent drawings and sculptures. In ‘Work in Progress’, Sharma’s centrepiece is a cluster of four buildings made out of metal.

On a wall facing one side of this construction site, Sharma has hung small paintings of construction workers against incongruous backgrounds of neat, polished rooms and corridors.

Yusuf Arakkal Retrospective

29 November-10 December

Yusuf Arakkal began life in Bangalore as a 16-year-old who’d run away from his home in Kerala to pursue art with seven rupees in his pocket. Arakkal’s parents had died before he was seven, and the rest of his family didn’t support his desire to become an artist. In his first 18 months here, he lived on the streets and worked at construction sites and teashops, until a relative found him and got him a job as a mechanic’s helper at Hindustan Aeronautics Limited. In 1973, Arakkal completed his studies in art at the Karnataka Chitrakala Parishath, while working the night shift at the factory. This week, Galerie Sara Arakkal will host a retrospective of his works. The show will open on Friday at 7.30pm, with the launch of the book ‘Yusuf Arakkal in Solitude’ by Giridhar Khasnis, P. Surendran and P. Sudhakaran, and a screening of the film ‘Voicing soliloquies’.

Arere Kunhirama!!!

An adaptation of Moliere’s ‘Scoundrel Scapin’, ‘Arere Kunhirama’ opens onto a typical morning at a harbour where Kamalahasa nervously awaits the return of his merchant father Manjappayya and Saahukaar Sampatturaaya, his friend. The cause of his anxiety is that his father has learned of his secret love affair and intends to get him married to the latter’s daughter. Funnily enough, Saahukaar’s predicament is almost identical, with his son Mohanadaasa romancing a low-class gypsy girl.

With matters at an impasse for the young lovers, Kunhirama emerges as their unlikely but sole hope, as he weaves a hilarious way out that seems to miraculously dissolve every obstacle and brings the tale to an agreeable conclusion for all parties.

Spaced Out?

3-19 December

A few months back, the Goethe-Institut/Max Mueller Bhavan got photographer Clare Arni to discuss the need for a platform and forum for young and emerging photographers in the city to explore the subject of art in public spaces. What resulted was a project that led Arni and five others—Vinayak Das, Jyothy Karat, Vivek M, Rakshit, and Vivek Singh to shoot and document public spaces in Bangalore—the streets, parks, tanks, neighbourhoods, and cricket grounds—that are used for cultural and artistic activities. This week, the show ‘Spaced Out?’ will present the works of these six photographers, as part of the Bengaluru Habba celebrations. The challenge, said a note for the show, was to document spaces that are disappearing rapidly “in the name of modernization, commercialization of land and expanding infrastructure". The show is part of a larger project aimed at raising awareness about the importance of public spaces in the city.

Schedules are subject to change.

Sure, a visit to the Delhi zoo is perfect as a Sunday outing, especially with the weather sorting itself out. But Wildlife S.O.S gives you the option of doing something for animals instead of just gawping at them. Established in 1993, this organisation aims at creating tolerance towards wildlife and relocating rescued animals back to either their natural habitats, or to the organisation’s refuge in Agra. They need people, obviously, so volunteers are most welcome.
