For the event, Chennai-based dancer Manjula Amaresh will begin her recital with Ganesha vandana, composed by V.P. Dhananjayan. This will be followed by shabdam, an item that introduces abhinaya, or histrionics, to the recital. The third performance will be a varna composed by the late Mysore Vasudevacharya, titled Ninne Nammi Naanuraa Krishna, wherein a devotee asks for Krishna’s protection.

Set in a future city where a sliver of gilded society lives atop a mountain of subterranean labour, Metropolis sends the city leader’s son on an odyssey in pursuit of workers’ advocate Maria. Meanwhile, her evil robot doppelgänger is set loose on a mission to corrupt and destroy the city. Brigitte Helm’s amazing, freaky double performance is a major asset. Building on earlier science fiction and influential on later works, Lang’s film is a mammoth marvel, fusing modernism and expressionism, Art Deco and Biblical spectacle. 2 hours, 33 minutes.

One of the main venues, Lalit Kala Akademi, will host some of the best works through the duration of the festival, while Hotel Taj Coromandel will open its venue to visitors on 25 March. There, they can view live painting and interactive activities. The event will conclude with an auction of the paintings on 26 March.

Treasures of Ancient China

The Archaeological Survey of India and the State Administration of Cultural Heritage and Art Exhibition, China, are presenting this exhibition featuring 95 artefacts. They represent the Chinese culture from the Neolithic period to the Qing dynasty. The chief attractions of the exhibition are bronzes, jade objects, sculptures, porcelain, gold objects, terracotta warriors and tricoloured pottery.

Holi Dance Marathon

Audio Ashram has a massive trance line-up to usher in the Holi weekend. Kiwi brothers Barton and Hayden Strom (you might know them as Antix) headline, playing a progressive trance-based set that’ll feature darker, driving tech and funky tribal grooves. Swedish psy trance duo Tegma also feature in the line-up, as do progressive trance acts Sun Control Species and Duca. Rounding off the big bill are Electrypnose, whose sets tend to include psy trance, chillout, electro and minimal sounds.

The Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) will present Loko- gaan (folk songs) of Bengal by Swapan Mukherjee. A product of extensive research, the repertoire of folk songs by Mukherjee will include Tusu, Bhadu, Jhumur, Alkaap, Bolan and Bhawaiya. Mukherjee knows all about the traditions associated with the occasions on which these songs are sung, the folk music instruments of Bengal and the oral traditions of Medinipur, Bankura and Birbhum districts. His renditions maintain the authenticity of the folk tradition.

Rhythm Divine

Sanskriti Sagar, in association with Taj Bengal and mjunction, will present Rhythm Divine, a performance by Pungcholam drummers from Manipur. The performance has been choreographed by Astad Deboo, a Sangeet Natak Akademi and Padma Shri awardee who has been working with these drummers for the last 15 years. These drummers make a living by performing in temples during weddings, births and deaths.

Ahimsa: World Music Quartet

The group grew out of a chance meeting in 1999 between Munich-based guitarist Matthias Muller and Indian violinist S. Radhakrishna. The other two group members of the group are percussionists Udai and Yoga. Their two albums to date, ‘Seven Steps to Liberty’ and ‘What is the Nature of Spirit?’, have been critically acclaimed. The event will be hosted by the Calcutta Classical Guitar Society and produced by Littlei.

Until a year ago, it seemed like veteran actor-director Sai Paranjpye, known for films such as Katha and Sparsh and for her Marathi plays of the 1970s and 1980s, had given up theatre direction. Then last year, the 73-year-old restaged her acclaimed play Sakkhe Shejari. This month, she revived her 1975 play, Jaswandi, to the delight of her loyal fans.
The play presents the story of a lonely married woman bonding with a younger man. 2 hours, 15 minutes.

Mak, a playwright, is working on an autobiographical script. The last wish of his ailing parents is to see their son happily married. A guilt-stricken Mak decides to cast a girl in his play, on the condition that she come to his house to play the role of his wife as well. Directed and written by Makrand Deshpande, the play stars him, Nagesh Bhonsle, Divya Jagdale, Ahlam Khan and Sanjay Dadhich. 2 hours.

Fauzia Maria Beg

Fauzia Maria Beg began her career singing at The Oberoi hotel’s Supper Club in the 1980s. After moving to Germany in 1989, she was last seen performing at Soul Fry Casa in Bandra six years ago. She returns to the Mumbai stage this time to perform popular Brazilian and Cuban tunes at Blue Frog. She’ll be singing forró, a kind of north-eastern Brazilian music, and some hits by popular singers such as Tania Maria and Ana Carolina.

Oliver Johnson aka Dorian Concept employs his skills as a classically trained pianist to craft unique jazz-, hip hop- and techno-inspired electronic music. Join the Dorian Concept as he conjures everything from infectious dance floor anthems to atmospheric electronic soundscapes.
