Ray

30 January

This entertaining biopic of “The Genius" Ray Charles (who died in June 2004, about a year before this film was made) covers the early period of the blind Georgia-born innovator’s 60-year career. Fans may complain that the director never lets the music truly breathe, but the fine cinematography (Pawel Edelman), evocative production design and a gallery of superb performances (topped by Jamie Foxx as the man) more than compensate. 2 hours, 32 minutes.

6pm. Suchitra Film Society, 36, 9th Main, Banashankari, 2nd Stage (26711785).

Krishan Dev Madan, then a programme officer with All India Radio, was preparing to record Gandhi’s speech on the day he was shot in 1948. Madan’s recollections of the day were recorded on 10 November and will be screened at this nationwide event titled Gandhi—5:17 (5.17pm was the time of Gandhi’s death), promoted by the Gandhi Peace Foundation to mark the day. Also watch a rare documentary on Gandhi, made by A.K. Chettiar in 1940 after extensive research and travel across four continents. Organizers say that all versions of this 81-minute film were thought to be lost after the British banned it, until a version was discovered recently.

Arghyam, 599, 12th Main, 2nd Stage, Indira Nagar. Passes can be collected from the venue. For details and timings, email ayan@arghyam.org or call 41698941.
