Review: Apple iPhone 7 Plus

The smartphone from Apple is meant for camera enthusiasts

NEW DELHI :

The “Plus" variant in the iPhone line-up finally has something to set it apart—if you are a photography enthusiast, the iPhone 7 Plus (Rs72,000 onwards) will not fail to impress.

The design is an evolution rather than a complete change. Though it is not longer or wider than the iPhone 6s Plus, the iPhone 7 Plus is 4g lighter. The iPhone home button is no longer clickable. Instead, the iPhone 7 Plus is driven by the Taptic Engine—pressure sensors and haptic vibration motors that simulate the feel of a button.

This is the first iPhone with dual cameras. There are two 12-megapixel cameras, the first a standard wide-angle one and the other a telephoto with the 2x optical zoom, which allows it to offer a total zoom of up to 10x. With two cameras working in sync, you get much clearer zoom-in images. The deep detailing is mesmerizing, the colour separation excellent and, even in awkward lighting, the algorithms maintain the overall tone of the picture without either blowing out the highlights or negatively affecting any colour. Shoot a subject looking directly into the sun, and you will still end up with a crisply detailed photo. With an f/1.8 aperture, the 7 Plus’ low-light performance too is better than that of its predecessor, the iPhone 6s Plus (which has an f/2.2 aperture—the lower number being better).

While the Retina Display size and resolution (5.5-inch LED; 1,920x1,080-pixels) have not changed, the iPhone 7 Plus’ display is brighter, and can reproduce more colours than the iPhone 6s Plus could. The visibility, even in the blazing sun, is significantly better.

It also runs the new A10 Fusion chip, with two high-efficiency cores and two performance cores—depending on how much power an app needs, the switch happens automatically. In most usage scenarios, users will see slightly longer battery life as well.

The headphone jack has been done away with. The Lightning port, used for charging the iPhone, will now also output audio. However, Apple is bundling an adapter with the phone that allows the existing 3.5mm headphones to work with the iPhone 7 Plus.

So far, the “Plus" iPhone variant was ideal for those who preferred a bigger screen. With the 7 Plus though, Apple has made it an excellent option for photographers too.
