If hundreds of supporters who stayed awake through the night and braved the rain at Kolkata’s airport to catch a glimpse of Lionel Messi went home dejected, there were others inside the airport who made the best use of the opportunity.
Bhaswar Goswami, executive director of the Celebrity Management Group, said late on Tuesday that Messi was deliberately made to stand in immigration for a long time “because they all wanted to have a share of Messi. Right from immigration officials to security personnel, everybody started posing with him,” he said.

Messi apparently handled it well, with a broad smile. “When he came out of the flight, many almost fell over him. There were loud shouts of ‘Messi, Messi’. The excitement was everywhere,” said Goswami.
After leading Barcelona’s 5-0 win with a double strike against Villarreal in a La Liga match on Sunday night, Messi was among the last batch of Argentines to join the squad. Argentina will take on Venezuela in a Fifa international friendly on Friday before flying to Dhaka for another outing against Nigeria on 6 September.
