Rudyard Kipling’s reputation waxes and wanes in India, but his popularity endures. Now, Rupa & Co. is bringing out new editions of his fiction under its Kipling Library label, with lovely, cool-coloured covers and warm-hearted introductions to each one by Ruskin Bond. The library includes ‘Under the Deodars’ and ‘In Black and White’, two of his lesser-known works which are, as Bond points out, often published together. There’s also ‘Plain Tales From the Hills’, and most thrillingly, a hard-bound ‘Just So Stories’ with wonderful illustrations by Prabha Mallya.
