Rupee closes lower against US dollar
The rupee closed at 65.37 against the dollar, down 0.35% from its Thursday’s close of 65.14
Mumbai: Indian rupee on Friday weakened against the US dollar tracking losses in Asian currencies.
The home currency closed at 65.37 against the dollar, down 0.35% from its Thursday’s close of 65.14. The rupee opened at 65.20 a dollar.
The BSE benchmark index rose 0.70%, or 222.19 points, to 31,814.22. So far this year, the Sensex has gained over 19.48%.
The 10-year bond yield closed at 6.757%, compared to its previous close of 6.729%. Bond yields and prices move in opposite directions.
So far this year, the rupee has gained 3.91%, while foreign institutional investors have bought $5.36 billion and $20.72 billion in equity and debt, respectively.
Asian currencies were trading lower ahead of US jobs data. Indonesian rupiah 0.407%, Philippines peso was down 0.362%, Malaysian ringgit 0.201%, Thai baht 0.194%, Japanese yen 0.142%, Taiwan dollar 0.141% and Singapore dollar 0.124%. However, Hong Kong dollar was up 0.036%, China offshore gained 0.027% and South Korean won gained 0.008%.
The dollar index, which measures the US currency’s strength against major currencies, was trading at 93.977, up 0.02% from its previous close of 93.961.
