A clear estimate of the size of the food industry in India is not available. Mehta claims it is around Rs4,000 billion. The unorganized sector accounts for almost 80% of the industry.

Growth rates in the industry are highest in the case of branded foods, health foods and convenience foods. Semi-processed, cooked and ready-to-eat foods are growing at 20% due to the growth in the middle class and the changing demands of consumers.
