Johannesburg: India, the world’s third-largest producer of coal, may boost the fuel’s imports by 5 million tonnes this year amid increasing demand from steelmakers and power producers, said Gerard McCloskey, chairman of the McCloskey Group.
India, which will be a major driver of coal demand growth in the next few years, will increase imports by a further 5 million tonnes in 2008, McCloskey said in a speech at a coal conference hosted by his company in Cape Town, South Africa.
Coal production in India lags behind demand as an expanding economy increases the consumption of electricity. India uses coal to generate around 80% of its 124,287mw of electricity.
