Sensex closes in red on profit-booking

The Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) benchmark Sensex came under pressure after touching a new peak of 14,316.54 in the initial five minutes of trading and succumbed to pressure due to profit booking at higher levels.
Discounting reports about India Inc’s robust performance in the third quarter this fiscal, investors adopted cautious approach at the current levels, brokers said.
The sensex opened firm at 14,306.97 but it fell back due to selling pressure and was quoted at 14,267.05 at 10.30 am, moderately down from previous close of 14,282.72.
The National Stock Exchange’s (NSE) S&P CNX Nifty eased by 10.85 points to 4,136.85 from last close of 4,147.70.
Markets opened quite subdued in the morning on 29 January 2007 and traded in red throughout the day on the back of selling pressure witnessed in the across the sectors except metal and oil & gas stocks.
The Sensex ended down 70.76 points or 0.50% at 14211.96, and the Nifty down 23.25 points or 0.56% at 4124.45.
About 1302 shares have advanced, 1288 shares declined, and 49 shares are unchanged.
ITC, ICICI Bank, Tata Motors, Satyam, Suzlon Energy, Zee Entertain and Wipro were the top loser on the indices.
However, NTPC, Reliance Comm, Hindalco, Tata Steel, GlaxoSmithKline and BHEL were the major gainers on the Indices.
The BSE Bankex index ended down 2.07% or 154.05 points at 7,292.78. Bank of Baroda, ICICI Bank, Oriental Bank, PNB and UTI Bank ended in negative.
The BSE IT index dropped 0.93% or 49.92 points at 5,315.57. Hexaware Tech, HCL Info, Wipro, Satyam and Patni Computer plunged.
The BSE Auto index plunged 0.54% or 29.97 points at 5,561.67. TVS Motor, Apollo Tyres, Tata Motors, Bharat Forge and Sundaram-Clayto slipped.
The FMCG index tumbled 1.89% or 36.81 points at 1,914.44. ITC, HLL, Nirma, Britannia and Dabur India ended down.
The BSE Capital Goods index sheded 0.10%or 9.64 points at 9,620.57. Crompton Greave, Dredging Cor, Ingersoll Rand, BEML and Aban Offshore ended in red.
However, The BSE Healthcare index gained 0.35% or 13.47 points at 3,816.66. Matrix Lab, Orchid Chemical, Apollo Hospital, GlaxoSmithKline and Lupin moved up.
The BSE Metal index surged 1.39% or 134.16 points at 9,759.61. Hindalco, Tata Steel, Welspun Guj, NALCO and SAIL ended in green.
The BSE Oil & gas index rose 0.39% or 25.77 points at 6,716.68. IOC, BPCL, Reliance and GAIL spurted up.
The NSE cash turnover was at Rs 8405.43 crore and the NSE F&O turnover was at Rs 22205.48 crore. The BSE cash turnover was Rs 3711.95 crore. Total market wide turnover was at Rs 34322.86 crore.
