Nikkei extends falls, down 3% on US fears, yen

Tokyo: Japan’s Nikkei average extended its fall on Wednesday, 16 January, tumbling 3% to a new 26-month low on a surging yen and growing fears the US economy may be heading for recession.
At 05:32 GMT the benchmark Nikkei was down by 3.18% at 13,528.36, its lowest since 31 October 2005, after shedding 442.93 points.
The broader TOPIX was down 3.5% at 1,302.55.
