The markets trimmed their gains by close with the benchmark index ending with a modest gain of 72 points at 13,526 levels.
The Sensex touched a high of 13,793 levels in intra-day deals. In broader markets, the Nifty gained 14 points to 4,030 levels.
“Technically, Nifty future has signaled strong support in the 3,810 region. Fresh downswing will be signaled only when this is broken decisively. Its immediate support is around 3,940 levels, below which it may move down to 3,900 – 3,880 levels,” said a technical analyst with Religare Securities.
Leading the pack of gainers among the BSE-30 scrips were ACC, Jaiprakash Associates and Satyam Computer. They firmed up over 4% each. Hindustan Unilever, Infosys Technologies, State Bank of India, Wipro and Hindalco were some of the other notable gainers.
Among sectoral indices, the BSE IT index was the top gainer, moving up over 2.5% by close of session. Financial Technologies, Wipro, HCL Technologies, Tech Mahindra and Patni Computer also logged smart gains besides Infosys Technologies.
Strength was also visible in FMCG counters. United Breweries, Dabur India, ITC Limited and Tata Tea and Hindustan Unilever ended in positive turf.
