Mumbai: India’s MMTC Ltd on Tuesday floated an import tender for 22,000 tonnes of pulses to be delivered in March-April, the company said on its Web site. (http://www.mmtclimited.com)
Of the total quantity, the company plans to import 12,000 tonnes of red gram or arhar, 6,000 tonnes of black gram or urad and 4,000 tonnes of chana or chickpea.
The bids will close on 26 February, the company said.
India, the biggest producer, consumer and importer of pulses, is battling rising prices as production stagnated at 12-14 million tonnes a year, well below its consumption of 16 million tonnes.
In April the federal government announced it planned to import 1.5 million tonnes of pulses.
