New Delhi: Exports of cotton have touched an all-time record of over 90 lakh bales in FY 08 as compared to only 10 lakh bales in FY 05. This is a nine-fold growth over the last three years.
Presently, India is the second largest producer with the largest area under cotton in the world, the second largest consumer and the second largest exporter of cotton.
“Better cotton cultivation practices, farmers’ education and evolution of BT cotton have led to a significant surge in productivity and quality of Indian cotton,” Century Textiles and Industries’ senior president R K Dalmia said. In the last few years, India has come to acquire a key role in the global cotton market.
