Live: Rupee closes little changed against US dollar at 63.77

Here are the key developments affecting the domestic and international markets today

5:00pm: The Indian rupee closes little changed against US dollar at 63.77 against its previous close of 63.76, as traders awaited further cues on US interest rates.

3:30pm: The S&P BSE Sensex closes 0.27%, or 75.05 points, higher at 28,298.13, while the CNX Nifty closed 0.24%, or 20.70 points, higher at 8,588.65. Shares of Larsen and Toubro Ltd (L&T) and Dr Reddy’s Laboratories Ltd are the top Sensex gainers up 2.74% and 1.79%, respectively.

2:30pm: The S&P BSE Sensex rises 120 points, or 0.43%, to 28,343.08, while the Nifty is up 32.45 points, or 0.38%, to 8,600.40.

2:01pm: Cummins India Ltd surges as much as 14.3% after the company posted a net profit of 210.73 crore for the June quarter compared with 212 crore for the quarter ended June 2014.

1:35pm: Indraprastha Gas Ltd climbs 8% on strong volumes after the company’s stand-alone net profit stood at 101.84 crore for the quarter ended June compared with 114 crore a year ago.

1:00pm: The S&P BSE Sensex is still trading flat at 28,208.44, down 14.64 points, or 0.05%.

12:41pm: Motherson Sumi Systems Ltd falls 4% to 375.25 after the company reported weaker-than-estimated earnings. Net profit rose 62% to 266 crore in the June quarter. 16 analysts of Bloomberg expected the company to post net profit of 296 crore.

12:24pm: Bajaj Electricals Ltd jumps 4.5% to 273 after the company reported a net profit of 20.34 crore in the June quarter, up 261.3% compared with 5.63 crore a year ago.

12:01pm: Rolta India Ltd gains 6% to 128.90 after the company said in a notice to BSE that it won Smart City and 3D Mapping projects worth about $15 million in the Middle East.

11:43am: FDC Ltd advances 10.6% to 193.30 after the company said its June quarter net profit rose 27.5% to 43.73 crore compared with 34.30 crore a year ago.

11:25pm: Mercator Ltd drops 9% to 21.80 after the company said its June quarter net loss widened to 35.40 crore from 12.31 crore a year ago.

11:13am: The S&P BSE Sensex is trading flat at 28,216.73, down 6.35 points, or 0.02%.

11:12am: Pharma stocks gain. Dr Reddy’s Laboratories Ltd jumps 3.1% to hit a record high of 4,325 after announcing strategic Collaboration with Amgen in India. Sun Pharmaceuticals Industries Ltd is up 1.7% and Lupin Ltd 1.9%.

11:07am: Snowman Logistics Ltd is down 5.8% to 107 after the company reported 77.6% decline in its net profit to 5.53 crore in the June quarter compared with 24.75 crore a year ago.

10:56am: Ramco Industries Ltd rises 2.3% to 112.80 after the company reported almost three-fold rise in consolidated net profit to 94.67 crore on the back of lower expenses.

10:48am: Sharda Cropchem Ltd declines 5.2% to 331 after the company said its net profit for the June quarter falls 16.4% to 36.03 crore from 43.12 crore a year ago.

10:40am: New Delhi Television Ltd (NDTV) drops 4.6% to 121.60 after the company said its net loss widened to 24.29 crore in the June quarter compared with 1.49 crore in the same quarter last year.

10:33am: The S&P BSE Sensex is trading slightly higher at 28,245.93, up 22.85 points, or 0.08%.

10:29am: Balaji Telefilms Ltd’s rally continues for a second day, with the stock surging as much as 10% to 105. Star India Pvt. Ltd, a unit of 21st Century Fox, has sold its 26% stake in Balaji Telefilms, acquired over 11 years ago, in a deal worth 108 crore, a discount to its acquisition cost.

10:24am: Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd (MTNL) rises 3.6% to 21.75 after a news report said that the government may compensate it and BSNL with 627.20 crore for 800 MHz CDMA spectrum that they surrendered.

10:16am: Brigade Enterprises Ltd climbs 8.6% to 160.80 after the company reported 269% jump in its June quarter net profit to 24.32 crore compared with 6.59 crore a year ago.

10:10am: Siemens Ltd jumps 4% to 1,554 after the company reported a jump of over 12 times in its stand-alone net profit for the June quarter on higher other income and improved operational performance. Stand-alone net profit for the third quarter of FY15 rose to 168.26 crore from 13 crore a year ago.

10:04am: Bata India Ltd falls 3.5% to 1,187.65 after the company reported 13.8% decline in its operating net profit in the June quarter to 70.50 crore compared with 81.74 crore a year ago.

9:57am: Tata Steel Ltd falls 1.5% to 258.20 after the company said talks with Switzerland-based Klesch Group for sale of its Long Products Europe business have been discontinued.

9:50am: Nestle India Ltd drops 5.4% to 6,461.15 after the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) on Wednesday clarified that it has not given “any clean chit" to Nestle India regarding the safety of Maggi instant noodles.

9:46am: Sectoral indices—the BSE Consumer Durables index is the top gainer, up 1.7% followed by BSE Healthcare which is up 1.2%. The BSE FMCG index is the top loser, down 0.8%, followed by BSE Metal and Bankex indices, down 0.7% and 0.3%, respectively.

9.44am: The BSE Sensex is trading lower by 0.08%, or 23.90 points, at 28,199.18, while the 50-share CNX Nifty of the National Stock Exchange (NSE) is down 0.07%, or 6.40 points, to 8,561.55.

9:30am: Indian stocks open flat after the stock benchmarks climbed to two-week highs on Wednesday.

9:25am: The yield on India’s 10-year benchmark bond is trading at 7.839% compared with its Wednesday’s close of 7.837%.

9:20am: The Indian rupee opens unchaged at 63.76 per dollar, but was later trading slightly up at 63.74, up 0.03%. Read more.

9:15am: The dollar is near a two-month high against the yen as traders increasingly bet that the Federal Reserve will hike interest rates as early as September.

In Tokyo, the dollar bought 124.80 yen, against 124.88 yen in New York on Wednesday when it briefly crossed the 125 yen level, its highest since early June. The euro edges down to $1.0903 and 136.07 yen from $1.0904 and 136.18 yen in US trade.

9:10am: Oil prices rise in Asia after a mixed US energy report showed a healthy decline in crude stockpiles but a rise in output that could aggravate the global supply glut.

US benchmark West Texas Intermediate (WTI) for September delivery is up 2 cents to $45.17, while Brent crude for September gains 11 cents to $49.70 in late-morning trade.

9:05am: In early trading, Tokyo stocks rise 0.66%, Sydney falls 0.69% on a major bank’s share sale and unemployment figures, and Seoul loses 0.29%. Shanghai markets fall 0.89%, following a sharp drop in opening trade, while Hong Kong is down 0.63^.

9:00am: Asian stocks are mixed in early trading, as gains on Wall Street drove trading in Tokyo but patchy US economic data fed wider uncertainty in the region.

8:55am: US stocks finish mostly higher on Wednesday, but a disappointing earnings report from Disney weighed on the Dow Jones Industrial Average, which shed 0.06% at 17,540.47. The S&P 500 gained 0.31% to 2,099.84, and the tech-rich Nasdaq Composite Index rose 0.67% to 5,139.94.
