Mumbai: Prices rose at the Indian Coffee Association’s auctions on Thursday on overseas demand for the new crop, traders said on Friday.

“The new season arabica plantation crop from Tamil Nadu and Karnataka saw (a) fair amount of export interest," a Bangalore trader said.

However, new season arabica cherry grades on offer remained unsold as prices continued higher than the rates buyers were willing to pay, he added.

In India, arabica coffee arrivals started in November and will continue through till February, while arrivals of robusta are expected to start from mid-January.

Last season’s arabica plantation grades and a few lots of robusta cherry grades saw some interest from local buyers, traders said.

Arabica is mainly used in premium coffees, while robusta is typically blended with arabica beans to produce lower-cost brewed coffees or processed into instant coffee.

The total quantity on offer at the auction was 313.35 tonnes of which 55 tonnes were sold, an auctioneer said.
