Merger and acquisition (M&A) transaction volume in Asia surged 68% in the first half of the year to $551 billion (more than Rs23 trillion today), according to ‘Bloomberg’ League Tables, as the region felt minimal impact from global market volatility. But both the number and value of M&A deals involving Indian entities declined in the same period, to 347 transactions worth a combined $20.7 billion, from 369 valued at $33.4 billion a year earlier, the tables show.
Australia and China were the strongest performing markets in the region, accounting for 42% and 21%, respectively, of the deal volume. “Market participants are optimistic about the continued growth of M&A activity in the region, particularly in China and India, where lower production costs may drive consolidation in industry sectors that may be able to benefit from additional scale,” according to ‘Bloomberg’.
