Tracking Asian markets, the Bombay Stock Exchange benchmark Sensex plunged by over 227 points in early trade on heavy selling by funds.
The 30-share index, which had gained 65 points yesterday, lost 227.68 points at 13,444.51 points in the first five minutes of trading.
Similarly, the wide based National Stock Exchange Index, Nifty fell by 66.15 points at 3,945.45 points.
Stock brokers said reports of weakening trends at other Asian markets mainly dampened the trading sentiments here, triggering widespread selling.
All the key sectoral indices were in the red with sizeable losses, reflecting the selling pressure.
