What are ETFs (exchange traded funds)? Please suggest some good ETFs. Also, I have invested in Brown Pharma and Indian Metal Chrome, but they are not being traded on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) for quite some time. Have I lost my money? What is the status of these firms?

ETFs are open-ended schemes listed on stocks exchanges and are designed to track a specific underlying sector/index/commodity, etc., and trade just like any other stock, combined with the benefits of a mutual fund. Since it is not a stock, unless you have a clear idea of your investment plan, it would be difficult to say which ETF is good as it would depend largely on your investment plan.
Brown Pharma was last traded on BSE on 21 September 2005, and has since been suspended. Indian Metal last traded at Rs214.75 on BSE on 8 May 2009.
