Rice export ban eased for Bangladesh
Rice export ban eased for Bangladesh
Mumbai: India, the world’s second biggest rice producer, will export 50,000 tonnes of the grain to Bangladesh, partly easing a ban on overseas sales, the commerce ministry said.
The West Bengal Essential Commodities Supply Corp. will sell non-basmati rice bought from within the state to Bangladesh, the directorate general of foreign trade (DGFT) said in a notification on its website.
The government had imposed a ban on export of non-basmati rice on 8 February amid rising prices and a drop in state reserves.
The government first restricted rice exports on 9 October 2007. It eased the ban in December, allowing shipments of the grain costing more than $500 (Rs20,100 at current exchange rates) per tonne on a free on board basis.
The government-run State Trading Corp. has urged offers for 20,000 tonnes of rice to be supplied to Bangladesh under a humanitarian programme.
Suppliers have time until February to submit offers. The grain is for delivery in Chittagong port, the company said.
