New Delhi: A 24-year-old marketing student from the Faculty of Management Studies (FMS), Delhi, who loves to window- shop, is among the few to land a job with the Bharti Group for the retail joint venture that it proposes to set up with Wal-Mart Stores Inc.
The deal is not sealed and the name of the stores remains unclear, but Suvagata Roy knows one thing: he’ll be working there soon enough.
Roy, a Kolkata native, was recruited this week during on-campus job placements, where Bharti joined dozens of companies looking for talent. Sources say Bharti has extended four offers.
Roy finishes exams in April and will then undergo initiation and training with the Bharti Young Leaders Programme. After that, he says, “I will be associated with Bharti Wal-Mart Enterprises." Roy has studied retail, both as consumer and academic. He considers setting up supply chains and dealing with regulations as the biggest challenges for the organized sector—which accounts for only 4% of India’s $300 billion retail industry. “Consumer mentality has not gone beyond the mom-and-pop store," says Roy, who did a summer job at a consumer goods company. He declined to give his salary, describing it as “competitive" and “more than enough."
