New Delhi: India may buy more sugar than previously forecast after the government lifted the import tax on raw and white varieties of the commodity to meet a shortfall in supplies.
Mills may buy 2.5-3 million tonnes of raw sugar in the year ending September, up from 1.5-2mt estimated last month, S.L. Jain, director general of the Indian Sugar Mills Association, said in a phone interview from Mumbai. London white sugar futures rallied to a seven-month high on Tuesday after the Election Commission approved tax-free imports of the commodity.
