Sensex lifeline: high beeps and pratfalls

Aptech (0.9% up)
The Aptech Ltd share rose 0.9% on the National Stock Exchange. The company has filed with the US Securities and Exchange Commission for an initial public offering of its China joint venture. Post-listing, Aptech will hold 22% of the outstanding shares in the holding company.
ACC (4.6% down)
Shares of cement maker ACC Ltd fell 4.6% on the National Stock Exchange to close at Rs792.70 each on Mint’s report that Coal India has proposed an 11% increase in coal prices. Brokerages have estimated that this could hit earnings of most cement firms by about 2-6% as they have coal linkages.
Raj Oil Mills (16.2% down)
Shares of Raj Oil Mills Ltd fell 16.2% on the National Stock Exchange. A sell-off is likely due to pressure to sell from qualified institutional buyers, who were allotted 38% of a July initial public offering. Two funds of Infrastructure Development Finance Co. alone were allotted 33% of the issue.
Tata Coffee (2.4% up)
Tata Coffee Ltd shares rose 2.4% on the National Stock Exchange to close at Rs265.10 each on reports that sales of its Eight O’ Clock coffee brand increased 30% in the first half of 2009. The brand has already seen additional sales of roughly $60 million (Rs292.2 crore) in the first half of 2009.
Prism Cement (10.9% down)
The Prism Cement Ltd share fell 10.9% on the National Stock Exchange on equity dilution concerns to close at Rs50.40 after opening at Rs55. The company’s board has approved the amalgamation of H&R Johnson (India) Ltd and RMC Readymix (India) Pvt. Ltd with Prism Cement.
Fresenius Kabi (7.8% up)
Shares of Fresenius Kabi Oncology Ltd were up 7.8% on the National Stock Exchange after reports that the company is planning to invest up to €30 million (Rs206 crore) in the next two-three years in the Indian company. Fresenius Kabi had recently bought stake in Dabur Pharma Ltd.
Kingfisher Airlines (8.5% down)
Shares of Kingfisher Airlines Ltd declined 8.5% on the National Stock Exchange after oil firms increased aviation turbine fuel (ATF) prices . The hike in ATF prices, the second in a month, is to the tune of Rs1,662 per kl in Delhi, Rs1,732 in Mumbai, Rs1,759 in Kolkata and Rs1,816 in Chennai.
Renuka Sugars (3.6% down)
Shree Renuka Sugars Ltd shares dropped 3.6% on the National Stock Exchange to close at Rs171.95 each on news that the government is considering increasing the sugar levy quota to 20-25 % and that prices of levy sugar may be increased from Rs13 to Rs20 per kg.
