Commodities | Mills in UP begin sugar cane crushing
Mumbai: Sugar producers in Uttar Pradesh (UP) have started crushing after a price dispute with farmers caused a delay of as much as four weeks to the start of the season, easing a shortage in the largest consumer.
Bajaj Hindusthan Ltd, the top processor, this week began crushing at three of its 14 units in UP and expects to start the remaining mills within a week, joint managing director Kushagra Nayan Bajaj said.
The delay in crushing threatened to worsen a global shortage as nations such as Egypt, Indonesia and Pakistan secure supplies.
