India's coal imports set to touch 53mt
Nice, France: India’s coal imports will rise to around 53 million tonnes (mt) by 2011-12 from around 30mt at present, one of India’s largest coal importers said.
Joshy Varghese, vice-president, trading, of Indian trading company Coal & Oil, said, “Of the 53mt of expected imports, 34 million is likely to be taken by the power sector, seven million by cement, five million by the steel and sponge iron sectors, and seven million by miscellaneous industrial buyers."
The cement-production sector in India is expanding rapidly to meet growing demand due to India’s construction boom, he said. “A continued boom in cement output will require higher coal imports."
