Maruti Suzuki India

The car market leader, Maruti Suzuki India Limited, grew by 17.3% and sold a total of 83,306 vehicles (67,448) in September 2009. This includes 11,712 units (6,318) for exports, thereby continuing its momentum in international markets.

Maruti Suzuki’s volume in the domestic A2 segment grew by 15.1% y-o-y. In the A3 segment, the sales volume marginally de-grew by 0.8% y-o-y during the month, due to capacity constraints.

The company plans to re-launch a refurbished SX4, with the latest 1-litre, BS-IV complaint, K-series engine, in the next couple of months. The management has also indicated capacity constraints for the fiscal and an excessive waiting period for Ritz and D’zire, which may affect its sales in the coming months.

Tata Motors

Tata Motors’ total sales (including exports) of Tata commercial and passenger vehicles in September 2009 were 52,513 vehicles, a growth of 5.8% y-o-y. The company’s domestic sales of Tata commercial and passenger vehicles for September 2009 were 49,650 units, a growth of 9.8% y-o-y.

The company’s sales of commercial vehicles in September 2009 in the domestic market were 31,474 units, a growth of 10% y-o-y. LCV sales were 18,454 units, a growth of 16% y-o-y. M&HCV sales stood at 13,020 units, a growth of 2% y-o-y.

The passenger vehicles business reported a total sale and distribution offtake of 20,743 units (18,176 Tata + 2,567 Fiat) in the domestic market in September 2009, a 23% increase compared to 16,829 units (16,586 Tata + 243 Fiat) in September last year. Sales of Tata cars, at 15,802 units, grew by 19% over September 2008.

Mahindra and Mahindra

M&M recorded a 10.6 % growth in Auto sales for the month of September 2009 to 28,134 units, largely aided by a 36.8% y-o-y jump in total UV sales to 21,961 units. The company reported a strong domestic sales growth of 25.9% yoy to 43,790 for the month of September 2009.

Ashok Leyland

Ashok Leyland (ALL) reported Total sales of 5,452 units (6,186), a yoy de-growth of 12%. The Truck Segment grew by a marginal 1.3% y-o-y, whereas the Bus Segment de-grew by 32.4%.

ALL plans to complete the supply of 875 Ultra Low Entry (ULE) buses to the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) by February 2010, and is confident of seeing sales growing due to the effect of governmental incentives.

Two- and Three-Wheelers

Hero Honda clocked a decent 4.2% y-o-y growth for the month of September 2009 to 401,290 units. At the same time, TVS Motors recorded a 3.9% yoy growth to 142,553 units for the month. BAL reported an overall Sales growth of 14.5% y-o-y to 280,916 units (245,381). The Scooter Segment de-grew by 41.4% to 662 units.

The Three-wheeler Segment reported a healthy 15.7% y-o-y growth to 31,121 units (26,887). BAL registered the highest monthly export sales in its history, growing at a robust 17.7% yoy to 80,681 units (68,572).
