Sensex, Nifty close flat, bank, infra, auto stocks rise

BSE Sensex closed higher by 2.81 points, or 0.01%, to 30,250.98, while the Nifty 50 rises 15.10 points, or 0.16%, to 9,422.40. Here are the latest updates

Mumbai: The 30-share S&P BSE Sensex closed at new peak of 30,250.98, gaining 2.81 points, while the NSE Nifty closed up 15.10 points at record 9,422.40.

Earlier, Indian shares extended their record-breaking run on Thursday with auto stocks rallying on expectations of lower interest rates after a better monsoon forecast eased inflation fears in a country that depends heavily on rains to irrigate its farmlands.

Strong regional markets, tracking a record high close on MSCI’s global stocks benchmark following strong gains in oil prices, also helped sentiment.

Here are the latest updates from the markets:

3.50pm: Sensex closes at new peak of 30,250.98, gains 2.81 points; Nifty up 15.10 points at record 9,422.40.

3pm: BSE Sensex trades higher by 41.06 points, or 0.14%, to 30,289.23, while the Nifty 50 rises 28.45 points, or 0.30%, to 9,435.75.

At 2.27pm, rupee was trading at 64.39 a dollar, up 0.29% from its Tuesday’s close of 64.63. The rupee opened at a 64.51 dollar and touched a high 64.34 and a low of 64.58, respectively.

2.50pm:Shares of Havells India were trading at Rs516.60 on BSE up 4.86% from the previous close. after Consumer electrical goods maker Havells India reported a decline of 74.10% in its standalone net profit at Rs94.70 crore for the fourth quarter ended 31 March 2017 against a net profit of Rs365.74 crore in the January-March period a year-ago.

2.40pm: Kotak Mahindra Bank rose 1.25% to Rs924.95 on BSE after shareholders approved increasing ceiling limit of foreign portfolio investors holding in the bank to 49%. The stock had outperformed the market over the past one month till 9 May 2017, rising 3.57% compared with 1.21% rise in the Sensex. The scrip had also outperformed the market in past one quarter, rising 18.17% as against Sensex’s 5.81% rise.

2.30pm: BSE Sensex trades higher by 74.70 points, or 0.25%, to 30,322.87, while the Nifty 50 rises 37.10 points, or 0.39%, to 9,444.40.

2.15pm: Siemens lost 3.89% to Rs1,404 on BSE after net profit fell 0.99% to Rs186.27 crore on 6.34% growth in total income to Rs2,988.84 crore in Q2 March 2017 over Q2 March 2016.

2pm: Poly Medicure fell 4.37% to Rs247.25 on BSE after net profit fell 7.9% to Rs13.27 crore on 10.4% increase in net sales to Rs116.05 crore in Q4 March 2017 over Q4 March 2016.

1.50pm: United Spirits rose 9.34% at Rs2,082. The stock topped the gainers in ‘A’ group. On the BSE, 93,000 shares were traded on the counter so far as against the average daily volumes of 1.15 lakh shares in the past two weeks.

1.40pm: Adani Transmission rose 6.71% at Rs81.15. On the BSE, 2.74 lakh shares were traded on the counter so far as against the average daily volumes of 2.12 lakh shares in the past two weeks.

1.32pm: BSE Sensex trades higher by 36.39 points, or 0.12%, to 30,284.56, while the Nifty 50 rises 23.75 points, or 0.25%, to 9,431.05.

1.15pm: Sun TV Network rose 6.62% at Rs919.35. On the BSE, 2.25 lakh shares were traded on the counter so far as against the average daily volumes of 71,000 shares in the past two weeks.

1pm: Sical Logistics rose 5.19% to Rs274.45 on BSE after consolidated net profit increased 55.51% to Rs14.12 crore on 16.81% growth in total income to Rs263.48 crore in Q4 March 2017 over Q4 March 2016.

12.45pm: IL&FS Transportation Networks rose 6.93% to Rs124.20 on BSE after the company said it procured a road project in People’s Democratic Republic of Laos.

12.30pm: BSE Sensex trades higher by 86.55 points, or 0.29%, to 30,334.72, while the Nifty 50 rises 36.85 points, or 0.39%, to 9,444.15.

■ 12.20pm: Ashoka Buildcon gained as much as 4.59% to Rs217.40 on BSE after the company said it received letters of intent for contracts worth an aggregate Rs282.73 crore from Jharkhand Bijli Vitran Nigam. The stock had underperformed the market over the past one month till 10 May 2017, falling 1.17% compared with 1.54% rise in the Sensex. The scrip had also underperformed the market in past one quarter, rising 6.37% as against Sensex’s 6.77% rise.

12.10pm: SML Isuzu lost 2.74% to Rs1,315 on BSE after net profit dropped 46.91% to Rs8.85 crore on 15.87% growth in total income to Rs371.22 crore in Q4 March 2017 over Q4 March 2016.

Meanwhile, the S&P BSE Sensex was up 110.84 points or 0.37% at 30,359.01. The S&P BSE Mid-Cap index was up 82.13 points, or 0.52% at 15,743.78.

12pm: Edelweiss Financial Services gained as much as 1.93% to 184.65 per share after ratings agency CRISIL has assigned the rating of ‘CRISIL A1+’ (CRISIL A one plus) to the proposed short term debt issue aggregating to 5,000 crore of the company.

11.50pm: Vardhman Textiles lost as much as 1.18% to Rs1,320 per share after the company reported a 10% drop in net profit to Rs158.56 crore for the fourth quarter ended March. It had posted a net profit of Rs176.21 crore in the corresponding period of the last fiscal.

11.40am: Union Bank of India gains 2.21% to Rs180.60 as it plans to raise a total of Rs6,350 crore by selling bonds and shares in FY18 as it looks to shore up capital to be ready for an acquisition if the government decides to merge small public sector banks with itself, chairman Arun Tiwari said.

■ 11.30am: BSE Sensex trades higher by 103.70 points, or 0.34%, to 30,351.87, while the Nifty 50 rises 39.65 points, or 0.42%, to 9,446.95.

11.15am: KEC International Ltd gained as much as 6.84% to Rs253.10 per share after it said that the board meeting for announcement of Q4 and FY17 results to be scheduled on 19 May.

10.55am: Emami Ltd gained as much as 4.15% to Rs1,145 per share after the Met Department’s bullish monsoon forecast eased concerns over El Nino weather conditions and earnings positivity as the companies are able to post good earnings and now on the anticipation of better than normal monsoon.

10.45am: Hero MotoCorp gained as much as 2.92% to Rs3,419.35 per share after it posted a 13.86% decline in net profit at Rs717.75 crore for the March quarter, impacted by lower sales and discounts to liquidate banned BS-III models. The company had reported a net profit of Rs833.29 crore in the same quarter of the previous fiscal.

10.35am: Shares of Siemens Ltd lost as much as 3.89% to Rs1,404 per share after it reported about 1% fall in stand-alone net profit to Rs186.26 crore against Rs188.14 crore same quarter last year.

10.25am: HCL Technologies gained as much as 1.89% to Rs858.20per share on BSE after consolidated net income rose 12.3% to Rs2,325 crore on 2% increase in revenue to Rs12,053 crore in Q4 March 2017 over Q3 December 2016. Read more

On the BSE, 1.02 lakh shares were traded in the counter so far, compared with average daily volumes of 2.20 lakh shares in the past one quarter. The stock had hit a high of 58.20 and a low of 40 so far during the day. The stock hit a 52-week high of 889.65 on 31 March 2017. The stock hit a 52-week low of 06.50 on 11 May 2016.

■ 10.15am: BSE Sensex trades higher by 109.09 points, or 0.36%, to 30,357.26, while the Nifty 50 rises 40.10, or 0.43%, to 9,447.40.

■ 10.05am: Shares of Caplin Laboratories Ltd jump as much as 14.91% to Rs466.95 to its highest since listing on 8 February 1995, after it reported a net profit of 114% to Rs33.4 crore. The stock is the biggest gainer on S&P BSE 500, NSE Nifty 500 indices.

■ 10.00am: Trident Ltd shares gain as much as 4.84% to Rs89.90 per share after the company reported a 63.6% increase in net profit to Rs99.7 crore for the fourth quarter ended March 2017. The home textiles and paper products maker had posted a net profit of Rs60.9 crore in the year-ago period, it said in a statement.

■ 9.55am: Dalmia Bharat shares gain as much as 4.75% to Rs2,480.75. It reported a steep jump of 94.16% in its consolidated net profit at Rs184.05 crore for the fourth quarter ended March. The company reported a net profit of Rs94.79 crore in January-March a year ago.

■ 9.50am: Shares of Hindalco Industries Ltd gain as much as 4.17% to Rs194.90 per share after Novelis announced 46% rise in net income at $73 million during the fourth quarter ended March 2017. Novelis grew its fourth quarter fiscal 2017 net income 46% to $73 million, and increased full-year net income by 78% to $233 million. Novelis is a subsidairy of Hindalco.

■ 9.40am: Cadila Healthcare shares gain 4.52% to Rs491.30 apiece after its US subsidairy Zydus Pharmaceuticals won Federal Circuit appeal in favour of generic version of Lialda.

■ 9.30am: BSE Sensex trades higher by 53.03 points, or 0.18%, to 30,301.20, while the Nifty 50 rises 23.75, or 0.25% , to 9,431.05.

■ 9.25am: Bharti Airtel loses as much as 1.95% to Rs365.45 after the telecom major saw some profit booking it said it will focus on cost controls and 4G data revenues and spend $2.5 billion in capex in a bid to stave off the stiff challenge posed by new entrant Reliance Jio Infocomm.

■ 9.20am: Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd gains as much as 3.87% to Rs536 per share after it reported over six-fold jump in its consolidated net profit at Rs1,514 crore for the fourth quarter to March, aided by the sale of its sports business.

■ 9.15am: At 9.08 am, rupee was trading at 64.52 a dollar, up 0.17% from its Tuesday’s close of 64.63. The rupee opened at a 64.51 dollar and touched a high 64.49 and a low of 64.51, respectively. Read more

So far this year, the rupee has gained 5%, while foreign investors bought $6.14 billion and $8.19 billion in local equity and debt markets, respectively.

■ 9.10am: The 10-year bond yield closed at 6.94% compared to its previous close of 6.93%. Bond yields and prices move in opposite directions.

■ 9.05am: Asian currencies were trading mixed. South Korean won was up 0.618%, Taiwan dollar 0.146%, Japanese yen 0.105%, China offshore 0.059%, Indonesian rupiah 0.37% and Philippines peso 0.042%. However, Malaysian ringgit lost 0.087%, Thai baht 0.066%, China renminbi 0.032%, Hong Kong dollar 0.008% and Singapore dollar was down 0.007%.

■ 9.00am: US equities closed mixed Wednesday as investors digested President Donald Trump’s firing of FBI director James Comey.
