Rupee closes 4 paise weaker against dollar at 60.18

The rupee opened at 60.17 a dollar and traded in the range of 60.10 and 60.20 a dollar

Mumbai: The Indian rupee weakened against the dollar on Thursday.

The home currency closed at 60.18 a dollar, down 0.07% from previous its close of 60.14. The rupee opened at 60.17 a dollar and traded in the range of 60.10 and 60.20 a dollar.

According to a currency dealer with a foreign bank, state-run banks were buying dollar from the market while foreign banks were seen selling the greenback. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) was absent.

Most of the Asian currencies ended higher. The Malaysian ringgit gained 0.35%, the South Korean won appreciated 0.26%, the Philippine peso rose 0.2%, the Japanese yen gained 0.21% and the Singapore dollar added 0.08% higher against the dollar.

The dollar index, which measures the US currency’s strength against major currencies, was trading at 80.523, down 0.05% from the previous close of 80.559.

BSE’s benchmark Sensex ended at 25,561.16 points, up 0.04%..

Since the beginning of this year, the rupee has gained 2.81%, while foreign institutional investors have bought $11.3 billion during the period from local equity markets.

The yield on India’s 10-year benchmark bond ended at 8.735%, compared with its Wednesday’s close of 8.723%. Bond yields and prices move in opposite directions.
