New Dehi: The Centre’s wheat procurement has crossed 200,000 tonnes this season, up 141% from last year, even without contribution from Punjab and Haryana, where buying commences on Wednesday.
Procurement, which began across the country on 18 March in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Gujarat, ahead of the normal schedule of 1 April, had reached 208,000 tonnes till Tuesday, compared with 86,464 tonnes in the year-ago period.
Procurement in Madhya Pradesh has increased to 156,000 tonnes even though the state government has not offered any bonus, unlike Rs100 per quintal last year.
According to the latest data, wheat procurement in Rajasthan stands at 47,598 tonnes against 382 tonnes in the year-ago period.
The Centre has so far bought 4,821 tonnes from Gujarat.
Wheat procurement will continue till June-end unless the government extends it, officials said. India had procured a record 22.7 million tonnes of wheat last year.
