G. Gopalakrishna takes voluntary retirement from RBI
Gopalakrishna will take charge as director of the Centre for Advanced Financial Research and Learning
Mumbai: G. Gopalakrishna, the senior-most executive director at the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), has taken voluntary retirement to take charge as director of the Centre for Advanced Financial Research and Learning (Caferal), RBI said on Monday.
Caferal is a non-profit body set up by the central bank in 2011 to promote research and learning in banking and finance. Gopalakrishna will take charge at Caferal with immediate effect.
Gopalakrishna joined RBI in 1980 and took charge as executive director in 2007, looking after banking supervision, financial stability and communication, among other areas.
After the retirement of Anand Sinha as RBI deputy governor in January, Gopalakrishna was rumoured as a probable candidate for the post but was dropped from the final list after being interviewed for the job.
Following this, the department of personnel and training had raised questions about the exclusion of Gopalakrishna despite his being the senior-most executive director. R. Gandhi, another executive director, was selected to succeed Sinha.
