New Delhi: India might extend by a year an existing domestic freight subsidy given to sugar firms to encourage exports, Farm Minister Sharad Pawar said on 20 September.
“I will consult the commerce ministry on export subsidy to sugar companies as some countries have objected to it and the matter has been referred to the WTO. “But we may extend it by one more year," Pawar told reporters on the sidelines of a farm meeting.
The domestic freight subsidy of around $30 (Rs1,197) per tonne and designed to help mills hit by a glut in supplies is due to expire in April 2008.
