Summer oilseed, grain output may top target
Summer oilseed, grain output may top target
New Delhi: The output of summer-sown oilseeds and grains is expected to exceed government targets, helped by decent monsoon rains, a farm official said on Tuesday.
India had hoped to get 18.5 million tonnes (mt) of oilseeds and 114.2mt of grains from its summer planting when harvest begins in October.
But with the annual June-September monsoons so far at 102% of the long-term average, the yield could be much more than originally estimated.
“This is going to be a good crop year as most states received good rains," agriculture secretary P.K. Mishra said. “The distribution of rains have been the best in recent times. Therefore, areas under pulses, cotton and oilseeds have gone up, but area under rice has been the same as last year."
