With the already rising input cost of key components such as steel, copper, aluminium and plastic used for manufacturing appliances and electronics, the 2% increase in excise announced in the Union Budget has added to the pressure on consumer durables’ makers. Consequently, most companies that operate in the Rs32,000 crore low-margin consumer durables market are ready to pass on the extra burden to the consumers by increasing the prices of their products such as televisions, refrigerators, air conditioners and washing machines.
