Mumbai: The Indian rupee rose for the seventh consecutive session on Tuesday, tracking the rise in Asian currencies and weakness in the US dollar.

The rupee closed at 62.24 per dollar, up 0.05% from its previous close of 62.28. The partially convertible currency opened at 62.2025 a dollar and touched a high and a low of 62.1425 and 62.2875 per dollar, respectively.

This is the longest winning streak for the rupee since June 2011, on speculation that the Federal Reserve will not raise interest rates until the second half of this calendar year, reducing the risk of emerging market outflows, Bloomberg reported.

Since January this year, the rupee has gained 1.28%.

On Tuesday, Malaysian ringgit gained 1.26%, South Korean won 0.89%, Indonesian rupiah 0.85%, Philippine peso 0.46%, Taiwan dollar 0.41%, Japanese yen 0.29%, China renminbi 0.14%, Thai Baht 0.12%, while Singapore dollar rose 0.051%.

The dollar index, which measures the US currency’s strength against major currencies, was trading at 96.794, down 0.25% from the previous close of 97.033.

The benchmark bond yield closed unchanged at 7.75%. It opened at 7.754% and touched a high and a low of 7.754% and 7.736%, respectively.

Sensex, the benchmark index of BSE, lost 0.11%, or 30.30 points, to close at 28,161.72 points.
