Mumbai: Indian shares extended their rise to touch 10,000-mark on Thursday afternoon, as unexpectedly strong US economic data fuelled hopes for a global economic recovery and boosted markets worldwide.
Short covering in monthly derivatives contracts that expire on Thursday also helped.
By 2:53 pm the 30-share BSE index was up 2.9% at 9,951.34 points, after climbing to as much as 9,966.02. Twenty-seven stocks were up.
The 50-share NSE index was up 2.5% at 3,058.95.
