Nasik: The Maharashtra government has sent a proposal to the Centre to get assured prices of onions to remain in competition as demand for the produce from China was rising in the world market.

Maharashtra Marketing Minister, Harshvardhan Patil, told the media here on 9 September that the price of onions was related to its produce and availability in the market and during its less arrival, both the growers and consumers suffered losses.

To remain in world-market, Indian onions should be of good quality, Patil said and assured that the government will provide financial aid and required training in this regard to the farmers.

Meanwhile, prices of tomatoes in the district market here collapsed to Rs25 per 20kg following heavy arrival of the produce and many farmers threw tomatoes on roads and in public garbage yesterday (September 9).

According to APMC sources, prices of tomatoes last month were Rs82-125 per 20kg, but they collapsed last week.
