Wireless subscribers clocked a 4.2% m-o-m growth, adding 15.64 million users in March 2009, to touch 391.76 million (mobile teledensity 33.7%).
With competition becoming fierce, most players managed to maintain their respective market shares at the cost of the leader, Bharti Airtel, which lost 20bps (market share at 24%, share in net adds 18%).
Although Reliance Communications’ market share in net additions fell to 19.3%, it overtook Vodafone to lead in the Mumbai circle.
’B’ and ’C’ circles continued to dominate, with a 56.8% share in net adds, while for FY09, total wireless additions stood at over 130mn, with monthly net additions averaging 10.89mn.
We believe divergence in subscriber deactivation rules must have led to double counting by telcos during the year. DoT’s ruling – disconnection of invalid IMEI handsets (w.e.f. 15 April, 2009) will affect 20-25 million GSM users, if there is no reprieve.
