RBI extends deadline to exchange pre-2005 currency notes
The deadline has been extended to 30 June 2015 from 1 January 2015
Mumbai: The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on Tuesday extended the deadline to exchange pre-2005 series currency notes to 30 June 2015 from 1 January.
The notes can be exchanged for their full value.
After 2005, the Reserve Bank introduced Mahatma Gandhi series notes with enhanced security measures. The central bank had in January last year said pre-2005 currency notes should be withdrawn from circulation as they had fewer security features.
The old notes will continue to be legal tender until the new deadline, RBI said in a notification on its website.
