In slightly under two decades, India has undergone a radical transformation from being a largely agrarian economy with a modest growth rate into one of the world’s most dynamic economies. Its GDP has grown at an average of over 8% per annum over the past three years. Propelled by this boom, there has been an unprecedented level of wealth creation. Entrepreneurship is clearly the dominant source of domestic wealth, but fast-growing service industries, such as technology and financial services, have also catapulted many middle-income group individuals into the ultra high networth individuals (HNI) bracket. Kotak Wealth Management and Crisil Research undertook a survey, Top of the Pyramid, to gauge various aspects of ultra HNI behaviour and uncover important trends. The survey was conducted among 150-plus ultra HNIs. The respondents were spread across the three major metros—Mumbai, Delhi and Bangalore—as well as Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Chennai, Pune and Kolkata. The survey took place between December 2010 and February 2011. Here are some findings:
