Tokyo: The Nikkei average jumped 3.4% on Monday, posting its biggest percentage gain in five months, with financial shares soaring on the US government’s bailout of mortgage finance companies Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.
Top lender Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group and No.2 Mizuho Financial Group rose by their daily limit, and a host of other financial shares topped the list of gainers.
The benchmark Nikkei average ended up 412.23 points at 12,624.46, the biggest percentage gain since a 4.2% advance logged on 2 April. The broader Topix rose 3.9% to 1,216.41.
