Nigeria seeks better luck as power shifts to General Buhari

In the first democratic change of power in Africa's most populous nation, former military strongman Muhammadu Buhari won the presidential election in Nigeria defeating incumbent Goodluck Jonathan.

The 72-year-old former army general Muhammadu Buhari led a tough military regime in the 1980s, after a successful military coup in 1983. Although an autocrat while in power, he handled corruption with reasonabe firmness. He now claims to be a “democratic convert”. AP
