Updated: 01 Aug 2015, 06:47 PM IST Livemint Thousands of people celebrated their new citizenships on Saturday as Bangladesh and India ended their seven decade old border disputes 1/6A total of 162 tiny islands of land—111 in Bangladesh and 51 in India—were officially handed over to the countries surrounding them on Saturday after Dhaka and New Delhi struck a border agreement in June. Photographs by Indranil Bhoumik/Mint 2/6The land-swap means some 50,000 people who have been living in the isolated enclaves since 1947 will now become part of the countries that surround their homes. 3/6Thousands of people, who have been living without schools, clinics or power for a generation celebrated the historic deal on Saturday night as the clock struck one minute past midnight. 4/6Many enclave dwellers lit 68 candles to mark the 68 years of hardships since 1947. 5/6Villagers that will now become part of one of the two countries are holding feasts, rehearsing their new national anthem and preparing for celebrations including traditional games. 6/6Jubiliant enclave dwellers celebrate their new found freedom.
