Updated: 07 Sep 2012, 06:00 PM IST Livemint Driving on the new expressway connecting Delhi and Agra is a very different experience 1/7Built at a cost of Rs 12,839 crore, the Yamuna Expressway crore, the Yamuna Expressway has five toll plazas, 41 minor bridges, 70 vehicular underpasses, 76 pedestrian underpasses and 183 culverts. 2/7This stall in a lane beside the expressway near Agra is the only spot that had tea and snacks the day we were on the expressway. There are restaurant buildings at the toll gates but these are yet to begin operations. 3/7Sri Ram, a shepherd, says that some of the villagers who got compensation for land acquired by the government have purchased plots in towns nearby. 4/7Sonu Aggarwal, 18, a BSc student from Karsauli village, does 200 pushups daily on the median of the expressway. Closed to traffic till recently, stretches of the expressway had become a sort of community space for the youth of villages that lie along the route. 5/7The children living in villages close to the expressway pass their time waving at cars. The orangecoloured SOS boxes are for commuters to speak to the operator if there’s a crisis. There are also air ambulances for emergencies. 6/7Beside the expressway, policemen were keeping watch on afarmers’ gathering at a village in Aligarh district. 7/7There are no fuel stations or garages along the expressway, just a few makeshift tyre puncture repair stalls.
