Updated: 27 Oct 2016, 03:19 PM IST Livemint As the Apple iPod turns 15, here's a look back at its history and influence over the years. 1/9The first portable music player from Apple, 5GB iPod, holding 1,000 songs was launched on 23 October, 2001 for $399. The design for the first-gen iPod meant only for Mac users included a mechanical scroll wheel. Reuters 2/9Apple introduced three different iPods in 2004: the iPod photo, the fourth-gen iPod in 20GB and 60GB models; and the 4GB iPod mini. The iPod mini (above) was available in five colours. It also introduced the click wheel for one-handed navigation. AFP 3/9Apple introduced two completely new models to the iPod family: the iPod Nano and the iPod Shuffle in 2005. Apple also released the fifth-gen iPod, otherwise known as the iPod with video (above left). AFP 4/9In January 2007 Apple released the first iPhone and by September a multi-surface touch interface had been incorportated into the iPod. The iPod touch which also allowed the user to watch videos was thinner than any other full-sized iPod. AFP 5/9The 2009 version of the iPod Nano included a camera for photos and video. The fifth-gen iPod Nano which boasted a larger screen than its predecessors also added another feature: an FM radio. 6/9In September 2010, Apple introduced its new fourth-gen iPod Touch (above) with retina display, FaceTime video calling, HD video recording and Game Center. Apple also unveiled the new iPod Shuffle, the world’s smallest iPod. AFP 7/9Apple made a few changes to the Nano’s user interface in 2011. The iPod touch also got a small update. Reuters 8/92012 brought some nice changes to the iPod line. First was the new Apple EarPods. The nano also got bigger and was also the first to include Bluetooth, a pedometer, and an FM radio tuner. Reuters 9/9The current sixth-generation iPod introduced in 2015 has upgraded the processor to the iPhone 6’s A8 chip. The new iPod Touch gets an updated 8-megapixel iSight camera, a FaceTime HD front camera and Apple’s 64-bit A8 chip and its M8 motion co-processor.
