Political leaders in New Delhi ought to begin preparing for another storm headed their way. On Friday, the Union government has called an all-party meeting to discuss the Telangana statehood issue. Going by past trends, it won’t be surprising if no decision on the issue is taken—once again.

It is time the matter was decided, once and for all. There are good reasons why a separate state should not be created, but valid counter arguments, however weak they may be, also exist. The people of Andhra Pradesh who have been kept on tenterhooks—the law and order situation there often gets out of hand due to the emotional nature of the issue—deserve better. Once a decision is taken, it ought to be defended with the full might of the government.

Creating new states is not a panacea to India’s problems of governance. Such steps ought to be taken with the care and reason that they deserve.
