The Union government has let doubts about the 19th Commonwealth Games persist for far too long. It has been less than transparent about how the Games were mismanaged.
Now, another report by the Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG) has shown in great detail how cost overruns made nonsense of the original cost estimates. Cost overruns are a time-tested way to indulge in corrupt practices.
Even at this late hour— long after the loot—the government should examine CAG’s report carefully and use it to fix responsibility, instead of creating another committee to examine its findings. The opposition, for its part, should desist from using it to score points. All that does is to lower the value of the effort that has gone to unearth the sordid facts listed in it
Not doing this will only embolden crooks who think that such reports are not worth the paper they’re printed on.
