End the charade

Zaki-ur-Rehman Lakhvi, mastermind of the 2008 Mumbai terrorist attacks, has walked out of a Pakistani jail once again. Repeated detention orders of the Pakistani government have been nixed by the courts. There is obviously some problem in the system of prosecuting him. Weakness of will in bringing him to book is certainly a reason.
No sooner is he freed, India lodges a protest. It’s time this charade is ended. India needs to act differently. In the so-called composite dialogue, the provisions for limiting terrorism and Pakistan’s promises on the issue should be scrutinized carefully. Better still, these should be discounted wholly.
Since 2008, India has seen a mixed trend in terrorist attacks from across the border. While these have not abated, a major event has not occurred. The ways to ensure that such incidents do not happen should be constantly evaluated and revised. Assurances don’t work in this business.
